We’re kicking off the Hong Kong Moms Book Club for 2017 with Lucky Boy, a new release by Indian-American author Shanthi Sekaran. The novel, set in Mexico and Berkeley, California, takes on motherhood in its different forms and challenges the reader to reexamine what constitutes the mother-and-child bond.
Inspired by a real-life story of an immigrant mother fighting to get her child back from its adoptive parents, Sekaran says, “I couldn’t get the story out of my head. I wanted to get inside it and know the thoughts and motivations of everyone involved.” But when writing about the child in the center of this story, she drew from her own life. “Much of the detail from Ignacio’s newborn day comes from the notes I jotted down just after my first child was born,” she says. “I’ve never had fertility issues, so I had to imagine and research Kavya’s struggle with infertility, but aspects of her life with toddler-aged Ignacio-her storytelling, for example-come straight from my own experience.”
Join us in reading, enjoying and discussing Lucky Boy. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this engaging story.
